SUMMARY:Pain Management Briefing by Prof. Dr. Gülseren Akyüz - Fundraiser for Earthquake Victims
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this presentation on Pain Management by Prof Dr Gülseren Akyüz. \nApril 8\, 2023 – 11 am – 2 pm \nSuggested donation $10 per person will be donated to Earthquake Victims in Türkiye – Event Registration \nAbstract of the presentation: \nHOW TO DEAL WITH PAIN? \nPain is the main alerting mechanism in the body that helps us avoid from harm and modify our behavior accordingly. However\, in certain conditions\, the body loses its ability to modify and understand pain as it should\, causing the pain to be amplified and lose its useful aspects. The mechanisms underlying normal pain physiology can all end up being altered in pathologic conditions. The loss of control over these mechanisms is the key change in patients suffer from pain. Today\, we try to understand the modification of these mechanisms\, but we cannot pinpoint the patients who will have altered responses to pain. Defined risk factors help us to some extent\, but there is still much more to be discovered in this area. \nToday\, we do not classify pain ‘acute’ or ‘chronic’ solely based on a time frame. Rather\, we consider ’pathological’ or ‘chronic’ when it becomes useless. Chronic pain can be defined as that pain which persists past the normal time of healing. Chronic pain is an unpleasant syndrome\, usually independent of the amount of underlying tissue damage. The impact of chronic pain on patients’ lives can vary from minor limitations to complete loss of independence. \nPain can be in one of four categories: Neuropathic pain\, Musculoskeletal pain\, Inflammatory pain\, Mechanical/Compressive pain. \nNeuropathic pain is described as the pain caused by a lesion or disease of the somatosensory nervous system\, and it can be categorized as either central or peripheral. \nNociceptive pain is often due to musculoskeletal conditions\, inflammation\, or mechanical/compressive problems. \nTreatment options for pain falls into six categories: Pharmacologic\, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Techniques\, Behavioral Medicine\, Neuromodulation\, Interventional and Surgical approaches. \nUpon completion of this meeting\, participants can find answers to the following questions: \n\nHow many types of pain do we see?\nWhy does pain become chronic?\nWhat should we do to deal with the pain?\nAre these methods sufficient?\n\n  \nAbout Prof. Dr. Gülseren Akyüz – Resmi Websitesi (profdrgulserenakyuz.com) \n\nAcademic Lecturer at Istanbul Medipol University\, International School of Medicine\, Department of PM&R\, Istanbul\, Türkiye\nDirector of PM&R Dept and Pain Medicine Outpatient Clinic and Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory at SANTE Medical Center\, Istanbul\, Türkiye\nEmeritus Professor\, Marmara University\, School of Medicine\, Dept of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation\, Istanbul\, Türkiye\nCurrent European Trainer in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R)\nCurrent International Academic Lecturer in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) and Pain Medicine\nFormer President of Mediterranean Forum of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (MFPRM)\nFormer President of European Forum for Research in Rehabilitation (EFRR)\nFormer President of Turkish Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R)\nE-mail: gulserena@gmail.com\n\nDr. Akyüz has published several original articles and book chapters in her key areas of interest which include chronic and neuropathic pain management\, cancer pain management\, cancer rehabilitation\, clinical neurophysiology\, and osteoporosis.   \nShe has received two International Awards from International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM) – \n\nHaim Ring Memorial Award – Individual\, June 2021\nSydney Licht Lectureship Award\, June 2009\n\nShe has also received two National Awards – \n\nOutstanding Achievement Award given by Marmara University School of Medicine\, Istanbul\, Türkiye\nOutstanding Service Achievement Award in Profession given by Fındıklı Rotary Club\, Istanbul\, Türkiye\n\nTurkish Coffee/Tea and light dessert will be served. \nAhmet Çalık Great Hall and Kitchen are reserved for this event.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit - love letters: a unique alphabet by hatice örün
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 4\, 2023 \n2:00 – 4:00 pm Prof Hatice Örün “Love Letters” Exhibit \nWe are pleased to announce a unique art exhibit at STCCC: \nlove letters: a unique alphabet by hatice örün \n“I want to make you a unique alphabet.” This opening line of a love poem by Nizar Qabbani intrigued me for many years. What would I put in it if I wanted to make an alphabet? I started collecting word stories\, learning scripts\, making designs and mapping them to my personal and professional landscape. During the first year of pandemic\, I assembled them using the form of “elifname” as a guide. Sprouting from Hieroglyphics all the way to Turkish\, this is my Alphabet\, these are my love letters to all those who taught me.” \nHatice Örün is a native of Istanbul\, Türkiye and has lived in Raleigh since 1983.  She is a graduate of Bosphorus University (Istanbul) BS’81\, Michigan Technological University MS’83 and North Carolina State University Ph.D’91. All her degrees are in Electrical Engineering.  She started her academic career in the teaching track of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at NCSU.  In 2004\, she also started working in the new NCSU/UNC-CH Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering.  For the next ten years\, she worked with her colleagues and university administrators to create a joint undergraduate Biomedical Engineering program between the two universities. In 2018\, she became full-time in the BME department and enjoyed the last two years of her career teaching UNC-CH students. \nShe is a co-editor of the book Women in Science and Technology (Routledge 2008). Ekmek ve Takvim\,  her first book of poems in Turkish was published in 2012. \n Brief presentation by Dr. Hatice Örün followed by opening reception will be held at STCCC on Saturday\, March 4th between 2:00-4:00 pm. \n The exhibit will be available to view until Sunday\, April 2nd. \n Please follow the link below to register with suggested $10 donation. \nEvent Registration – Sancar Turkish Center \n Looking forward to seeing you at this most unique “love letters” exhibit by Hatice Örün. \nTurkish Coffee/Tea and light dessert will be served. \nAhmet Çalık Great Hall and Kitchen are reserved for this event.

The adjacent village was flattened by the quake and little help has yet to arrive. The first Christian church at Antioch is also in the affected area.\nProf. Kate Grossman\, NCSU\, has been researching civilizational sites in NW Syria and will share cultural aspects and importance of the affected area.\nBridge to Türkiye Fund (BTF)\, a North Carolina non-profit established 20 years ago to assist the recovery after earthquakes left 17\,000 dead in Türkiye.
